Advice from the Modus Horlogerie workshop
An automatic watch is much more than an accessory: it is a piece of precision mechanics.
To ensure it retains all its beauty and reliability over the years, proper maintenance is essential.
At Modus Horlogerie , our watches are hand-assembled in France by skilled watchmakers and come with a 3-year warranty . Here are our tips for preserving your watch over time.
Wear it regularly
An automatic watch works thanks to the movements of the wrist.
By wearing it daily, the internal rotor maintains the tension of the mainspring and ensures good regularity of movement.
If you don't wear it often, remember to wind it manually once or twice a week.
- Tip: avoid repeated shocks or intense sporting activities that could disrupt the mechanism.
Protect it from water and moisture
Although many models are water resistant, it is best not to expose the watch to hot water , steam, or extreme temperature variations.
Ensure that the crown is always screwed on tightly before any contact with water.
For frequent immersion (swimming pool, sea), opt for a rubber or steel bracelet rather than a leather one.
Clean it regularly
A simple soft microfiber cloth is sufficient to clean the watch after each use , especially the back of the case and the strap, where sweat can accumulate.
For a more thorough cleaning:
-
Use a soft-bristled brush and slightly soapy water.
-
Always dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.
-
Avoid all chemical or abrasive products.
Regular gentle cleaning keeps the watch sparkling without risk of scratches.
Avoid magnetic fields
Automatic watches are sensitive to magnetic fields (speakers, phones, computers, magnets…).
Prolonged exposure can disrupt the operation of the balance wheel and affect accuracy .
Store your watch away from these sources when you are not wearing it.
Have your watch serviced by a qualified watchmaker
Even when well maintained, an automatic watch needs to be serviced every 3 to 5 years to guarantee its accuracy and longevity.
During a service, the watchmaker disassembles, cleans, lubricates and adjusts the movement in order to restore its original performance.
At Modus Horlogerie , our French workshop provides this service directly on site, with experienced watchmakers and original parts.
- Each Modus watch is covered by a 3-year warranty , and can be serviced or maintained in our partner workshop in France.
In summary
Maintaining your automatic watch means making it last, but also preserving a unique mechanical expertise.
With a few simple steps and regular maintenance, your watch will remain accurate and elegant for years.
Modus Horlogerie , a French workshop specializing in modded and personalized watches, accompanies you in this interview with passion and expertise.
